Hello,
Welcome to Figma Decal — it's finally time for our first week of class!! 🎉🎈🍰🪅🥳
So sorry about the double email you just received. I'd left placeholders for the lecture/homework/lab links, but we want to wait until tomorrow to publish them since today isn't a workday. This email has all the same content!
=====
For those of you who took or followed along with Figma Decal last semester, you already know that our content is hosted on our Figma Community page. We are going to unpublish all of these files this evening and republish them (updated!) as the semester progresses.
If you want to copy any of these files to access before we get to them later this semester, please do so now! In addition, our Spring 2021 class recordings have been archived, but you can find them here. We'll post our new Fall 2021 recordings on our website just like last semester.
With increased interest in our course this semester, we've been thinking about ways to make auditing better and more valuable. One change we're considering is streaming one lab section each week. While this can't be as interactive and hands-on as our in-class labs, you'll be able to watch someone on staff (probably me!) walk through the lab and show you how we'd do it. If you're interested, please fill out this form and let us know what you'd like.
If you haven't already heard, Figma just released two exciting updates: Audio and Cursor Chat for both Figma and Figjam! 🔈🔉🔊 These are awesome collaboration tools that we hope you check out — and we'll be teaching them, too. (And don't forget to check out the HIGH FIVES ✋✋)
Our first lecture is a welcome to the course: introducing the entire course staff, walking through our syllabus, and outlining course expectations. Then, we'll just right into the core tools of Figma, including the selection tool, shapes, text, and frames. Finally, we'll discuss just what we mean when we say design and think about new kinds of frameworks.
We're waiting until Tuesday to republish these files, but we'll ordinarily link them here as well. We'll send a quick message once they're up!
To kick off your Figma exploration, our first lab is a series of small exercises in zooming, panning, clicking, dragging, copying, flipping, reversing, and all sorts of selection tool magic! Through three pages of activities, you'll see just how much you can do with a little copy-pasting. By the end, you'll start to get all those shortcuts under your belt to make navigation a breeze.
The first homework assignment is to create a trading card that share a bit about yourself! You can follow our given templates or go as off the rails as you'd like. Get comfortable with each of the tools and navigating a file, and learn about our staff along the way! We can't wait to see what you make :~)
As always, our Slack Community is open — join through this link! If you haven't already, please introduce yourself in our #welcome channel 💛
